On To Texas

I had to post again today, even though it was an uneventful day of driving for us.  Today is our granddaughter Payton’s 2nd birthday.  I’m attaching a picture of our Little Miss in her birthday dress.  With the wonders of modern technology, we were able to see a video of her Momo (great grandma Patsy) reading her a story.  And we did Face Time (like Skype) and talked to her.  But her birthday and a message that our neighbor from our Tyler Creek camping days passed away today make us realize that there will be events that we will miss during our travels.  This seems to bother me a little more than it does Mike (could it possibly be that nuturing, maternal thing?)
We left Bay St. Louis, MS at 8 am and arrived at our campground in north of Houston at 4.  To pass the time, we listened to the audio book of “The Duck Commander Family.  How Faith, Family and Ducks Built a Dynasty” by Willie and Korie Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame.  Willie and Korie do the reading.  It was quite ironic that Willie was extolling the multiple ways to enjoy crawfish (which he loves) as we were passing billboard after billboard advertising “All You Can Eat Crawfish Buffets”!  They told us in New Orleans that it is prime crawfish season.  That is one local delicacy we didn’t partake of.  Crawfish must be big in Texas, too, because we are seeing the same signs.  And we were on a bridge that spanned a swamp (sorry. . . a bayou) for 20 miles that was dotted with fishing boats.  Starting at about Beaumont, Texas, the landscape changed to oil refineries.  We ended our day on a high note – meeting niece Kelly Magee and her boyfriend Kevin for dinner.  After 8 hours on the road, she was very kind and picked a BBQ place only 12 miles from our campground. It was great to see her and meet Kevin.
As with all travels and travelers, words and pictures aren’t going to do justice to the sights we are seeing.  I look back at the pictures I took in New Orleans, and I know they didn’t convey the beauty and uniqueness of the city.  And we haven’t even gotten to the Wild West yet!
